It was a most special day for Maryland when Include, a homebred for longtime leading Maryland breeder Robert E. Meyerhoff, became the fourth Maryland-bred in history to win the Grade 1 Pimlico Special, accomplishing the feat during his 4-year-old season in 2001.
A son of Meyerhoff's homebred multimillionaire, leading sire and Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame inductee Broad Brush, Include was conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Grover G. "Bud" Delp, who sent him out to win five handicaps over five consecutive months in 2001 and be named that year's Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion older male.
Include launched his championship season at the Fair Grounds, winning the Whirlaway in February, followed by his first graded score in the Grade 2 New Orleans in March. Sent to Pimlico, he scored a daylight victory in the historic Jennings Handicap in April for state-breds, then took aim at the Special three weeks later.
Facing top handicap horses Albert the Great and Milwaukee Brew in the mile and three-sixteenths Special, Include was relentless to the wire, reeling in favorite Albert the Great to win by a neck. The effort earned him a 117 Beyer figure. It was then on to Suffolk Downs and the Grade 2 Massachusetts -- he won by four lengths over a sloppy track, with Broken Vow among those vanquished.
In his remaining four starts of the year, he hit the board in three graded stakes. He missed by a neck while carrying top weight when second in the Grade 2 Clark at Churchill Downs, and finished third twice -- in a three-horse photo with Gander and Broken Vow in the Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup, and behind Albert the Great in Belmont Park's Grade 2 Suburban.
He bankrolled $1,435,400 in 2001, with eight top-three finishes in nine starts.
Include displayed his potential at 3 when winning Delaware Park's Vincent A. Moscarelli Memorial Stakes by nine and a half lengths in his stakes debut, which also marked his fourth win in a row.
At 5, he was a repeat winner of the Jennings and finished third in the Massachusetts Handicap-G2 behind Eclipse Award winner Macho Uno and New York-bred great Evening Attire while giving them weight.
Include retired with 10 wins, a second and four thirds in 20 lifetime starts and earnings of $1,659,560. He was one of five stakes winners for his dam, 2001 Maryland Broodmare of the Year Illeria, whose 13 foals included nine stakes performers. In addition to Broad Brush, he joins Meyerhoff-breds Concern and Richard's Kid in the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.
Include entered stud at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky in 2003 and remained there the rest of his life. Pensioned from stud duty in 2021 due to a heart condition, he was euthanized the next summer at age 25. He sired nearly 60 black-type winners and the earners of more than $67 million, led by Grade 1-winning millionaire Panty Raid, the dam of Grade 1-winning multimillionaire Proxy.
