Bee Bee Bee shocked the racing world in 1972 with a front-running performance in the Preakness Stakes, upsetting Kentucky Derby winner and overwhelming favorite Riva Ridge over the muddy track. Carrying the silks of William S. Farish III, Bee Bee Bee became the seventh Maryland-bred winner of the Pimlico classic. He was voted that year's Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old, after a championship season at 2.
It was a most special day for Maryland when Include, a homebred for longtime leading Maryland breeder Robert E. Meyerhoff, became the fourth Maryland-bred in history to win the Grade 1 Pimlico Special, accomplishing the feat during his 4-year-old season in 2001.
